Uberagent metrics

 Hi,

I was wondering what the metric Average tcp send latency measures and how it is calculated?  Also is there any detail on how other metrics are calculated?

    Hi Sarah,

Detail on how metrics are calculated is available on request. Regarding TCP send latency, uberAgent uses a combination of the following:

    • delta between connect and send events for one target
    • duration of send events as reported by the stack

TCP send latency metrics are reported only if a certain number of measurements could be taken per target and data collection invertal in order to minimize the effect of outliers.

I hope this helps answer your questions.

    Thanks, Helge

    Hi Helge,

Thanks for that.  So if TCP send latency was considered high would that indicate delays on the client side?  When you say the delta between connect and send events how is that measured does it use packet data?  Is the delta between the start of first connect sent by client and start of first send by client or is the delta between the start of the completed connect and the first send - I am just trying to understand whether network RTT come into the calculation or whether it is just client delay.

Would it be possible the have the details on how the metrics are connected?  I am evaluating uberAgent and it would help a lot with my understanding of what is being measured and how uberAgent can help us.

    Regards,

    Hi Sarah,

uberAgent's TCP send latency includes the processing time on the server side, so it is very well suited to gauge the performance of backend services like Exchange or even Windows file servers.

A good example is folder redirection, where all requests go to a file server instead of the local disk. In that scenario file server performance directly affects application responsiveness, and TCP send latency is a very good indicator for measuring the servers performance.

I will also send you an email in case you want to discuss this further.

    Regards, Helge
